Message from Congressman Rob Wittman:
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Affordability remains the top concern I hear about across Virginia’s First District — from working families in Henrico and Hanover to watermen in the Northern Neck and small business owners along the York River. That’s why I am focused on three key areas that directly impact your cost of living: housing, healthcare, and energy.
Making Homeownership More Attainable
Owning a home is part of the American Dream — but high prices and limited supply have put it out of reach for too many families. Congress is working to:
- Modernizing and streamlining federal housing processes and working with state and locals to do the same.
- Strengthening local housing operations and community capacity to produce more affordable homes in rural and urban areas.
- Coordinating federal efforts on housing affordability, financing, and construction costs.
- Expand mortgage portability and assumability to give families more flexibility in a high-rate environment.
We are also building on the Working Families Tax Cuts Act to provide long-term certainty for small businesses, farmers, and family-owned operations here in Virginia.
Lowering Healthcare Costs and Increasing Access to Treatments
Healthcare expenses continue to burden families and small employers. That’s why Congress enacted major pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) reforms to increase transparency and prevent hidden pricing practices that drive up prescription drug costs. Congress – and I have cosponsored legislation – that will increase access to care.
We are also pushing for:
- True price transparency from hospitals and insurers.
- Reforms that send healthcare subsidies directly to patients instead of insurance companies.
- Market stabilization policies that lower premiums and protect taxpayers.
- Removing barriers for Medicare to cover emerging diagnostic tools and supporting policies that would spur drug development for rare diseases
These reforms are about empowering patients — not bureaucracies — and ensuring families both have access to and know the real cost of care before they receive it. Patients should have the choice.
Unleashing American Energy to Cut Utility Bills
Energy costs impact everything — from grocery prices to heating your home. Republicans have prioritized restoring American energy dominance by:
- Cutting red tape to accelerate domestic production.
- Streamlining the permitting process and reducing regulatory burdens so that more projects can get started.
- Addressing vulnerabilities in America’s energy supply chain.
- Protecting consumer’s ability to access diverse energy sources.
Affordable, reliable energy is essential to keeping Virginia families’ monthly bills manageable.
We have made meaningful progress, but our work is not finished. I remain committed to advancing policies that strengthen our economy, expand opportunity, and lower costs for families across the First District.
As always, your input matters. Please do not hesitate to reach out and share how rising costs are affecting your family.
Sincerely,
