Dear Friends and Neighbors,
For many Virginia families, finding affordable, reliable child care is one of the biggest challenges they face.
Whether you’re working an early morning shift, serving as a first responder, working in health care, or balancing a demanding schedule, access to quality child care shouldn’t stand in the way of providing for your family.
That’s why I recently joined bipartisan legislation to expand child care options, modernize child care programs, and better support working parents across the country.
I am proud to cosponsor the After Hours Child Care Act, which would help establish and expand child care programs for parents who work nontraditional hours. The legislation recognizes that many Americans, including nurses, police officers, firefighters, military families, and service industry employees, work outside of a typical 9-to-5 workday. Current child care options are often insufficient to meet the needs of these essential workers during evenings, overnight shifts, weekends, and other schedules when traditional child care is unavailable.
I also recently joined the Child Care Modernization Act of 2026, bipartisan legislation to reauthorize and modernize the Child Care and Development Block Grant program. The bill strengthens access to quality child care, improves affordability, increases accountability, and helps ensure families have greater access to safe, dependable care while parents are at work.
Strong families are the foundation of strong communities. Supporting parents means making it easier to find safe, affordable child care that fits the realities of today’s workforce.
I will continue working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to advance practical policies that support working families, strengthen our workforce, and expand opportunities for children to thrive.
