Message from Congressman Rob Wittman on Immigration Policy
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I recently sent out a poll asking what issue is most important to Virginians in the First District, and many of those who responded answered “immigration.” With this in mind, I want to outline my stance on immigration policy and address your questions.
The United States is a nation built by immigrants — but we are also a nation of laws. As Congress considers reforms to federal immigration enforcement policies, it is essential that we strike the right balance between public safety, humanitarian protections, due process, and border security.
Immigration and border security remain serious concerns for many Virginians. Recent changes at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), ongoing debates about federal enforcement, and nationwide protests have raised important questions about how our immigration system should function.
How did we get here?
The previous administration reversed a number of policies that had been in place – including enforcement tools that deterred illegal immigration. Following that reversal, there was a sharp increase in unlawful border crossings, the flow of fentanyl spiked, and a massive strain on our localities, schools, and other community services.
By contrast, when President Trump took office in 2025, one of his first actions was to declare a national emergency at the southern border to allow the government to gain operational control of the border, combat the cartels, and secure our nation. Additionally, Congress has taken steps to provide resources for state and local communities as well as additional funding for border security, technology and screenings.
We must continue to take a comprehensive approach to securing our border, enforcing the rule of law, and ensuring law enforcement has the resources necessary to keep us safe. I believe that immigration enforcement must always be carried out humanely, professionally, and consistent with due process. As reforms are discussed and debated, I remain focused on making sure our nation’s current immigration laws are enforced so that our immigration programs function properly.
As always, your input matters. Please do not hesitate to reach out and share your thoughts about immigration policy. You can take my most recent immigration policy poll here.
Sincerely,
