The Senate recently released a report arguing that the likely origin of COVID-19 pandemic was from a research-related incident in China. This report from the Senate is not shocking. In fact, I have been calling to hold China accountable for their role in the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year, I introduced the World Deserves to Know Act to sanction key officials in China who have suppressed the truth, including the silencing and jailing of citizen journalists until an investigation is allowed. My bill would also prohibit American funding from going to China for research similar to that of the Wuhan Institute of Virology and give Taiwan Observer Status in the World Health Organization to check China’s malign influence over the organization.
It has been almost three years since COVID-19 began spreading across the globe, yet Americans are still left with many unanswered questions about the exact origins of the virus. Millions around the world lost their lives, and even more endured years of disruption, fear, and frustration. I hope my colleagues in Congress are motivated to discover the truth of the COVID-19 pandemic and hold China accountable following the Senate’s report. I will continue my work in Congress to ensure that you get the answers you deserve and future generations do not have to suffer through a similar catastrophe.
